There is a lot of talk in the world about counting calories. Do you need to count calories when trying to lose weight? Some people seem to be able to lose weight without counting calories but some people cannot. I myself cannot seem to lose weight without counting them. So what is a Calorie?

A calorie is an energy. The energy that comes from food that we eat. Calories consumed are then used for everyday activities. Just being alive will burn calories.YEAH, I just burned calories by breathing.  Calories that are not consumed by energy are stored as fat.

A calorie is a calorie regardless of whether it is a good calorie or a bad calorie, it is still a calorie.

The first law of thermodynamics(law of conservation of energy)

“Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but only be transformed from one form to another. So Chocolate cake energy becomes love handles. Hmmm..

There are three energy-producing nutrients.

Protein repairs and maintains body tissue(muscle, skin, internal organs)

Carbohydrates have a varied nutritional value, some are

-loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and disease-fighting antioxidants and phytonutrients

-loaded with calories and very low in nutritional value

Others have a little of both. They have calories and nutritional value.

Fat is an essential component for cells.

Promotes healthy skin and partners with certain vitamins, it helps cushion and protects vital organs

New Day

Look at each day as a blank sheet of paper..

Yesterday, is history. It is written in stone. Take what you can learn from it and leave the rest.

Today is a nice white sheet of paper. There are no smudges, rips or tears. It is sitting there waiting for you to write down all of your hopes and dreams. You are the writer of your own history, you decide on how today shall be written.

Today, I will!

We are at the lake camping with all of the traditional food that involves. Hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and smores. My hope is that all of the traditional activities will cancel out all of the foods. Swimming, kayaking and a lot of walking. Unfortunately, as far as my challenge goes I’m going to have to restart it. 😭 I will restart on Monday when I come back from the lake.

Amazing Day

I had an amazing day today. I spent the day at an in-service, listening to different guest speakers. There was one lady that I listened to that spoke about things that were relevant to all ages, Julia Cook. Julia Cook is a children’s book author, a guidance counselor and she also is a motivational speaker. Today the title of the seminars that she gave was called. “Got Hope” Understanding the importance of Mindfulness and “Reboundaries and Resilience…..Enhancing Skills that Foster Boundary Recognition Determination and GRIT!”  This seminar was geared toward helping children, but I came away thinking that a lot of what she talked about related to any age.

One of the quotes that she had on her power point was “The glass is not half full or half empty it is refillable” Is that not the most interesting bit of wisdom. You always hear how people talk about if they are half full or half empty personality. Really just refill the damn cup when it gets low. Another thing that I came away with is to always have goals. A person with goals always has hope. A person needs hope. She also read some of her books and they were amazing. Here is a link to her website Check her out because if I could go to another one of her presentations, I would. She was funny, interesting and very relatable for any age.

My Challenge update.

This is day six I started on the first of August. I did not exercise or log anything on Sunday but have done very well the rest of the week. So I’m thinking should I start over or continue on with my challenge and have a day each week that is not included. Hmmmmm

Quote, I found that relates.

Weight loss is like driving:

If you ever veer off the road, just make a U-turn and head back in the right direction.

On we go!

Food and Exercise

Working towards a healthy weight and being healthy in my opinion is about both eating right and exercise
Over the years I have tried to do one or the other to lose weight and the only time I have managed to lose weight is when I have done both at the same time.
Here is some exercise and foodie fun.
Tiffany Rothe has a youtube channel that I absolutely love called TiffanyRotheWorkouts She is amazingly fun and works your butt off. You should check out her 10 min Booty Shaking Waist Workout and it is a workout.
Yoga- I love yoga. I have not found a yogi youtube person that I love as much as Tiffany Rothe. I usually do a search for simple beginner yoga and do whatever I am in the mood for. I also have the go-to poses that I do when I just want to get in a 5 minute stretch between my classes. Yoga has been around for thousands of years and I figure something that has been around that long is not considered a fad and is worth a try. If you would like to read up about Yoga here is a link to some information on WebMD.
Here is a great read on super healthy foods called 50 Foods That are Super Healthy written by Kris Gunnars, BSc.
Food is one of my favorite topics because I love to eat. Probably the reason my weight was 256 pounds at one time. NO, we will blame that on my daughters’ dad, crutches and the Milano cookies he kept bringing me. Awesomeness in a bag, that is my story and I am sticking to it;-)

To me food is not just fun to eat but I think it is very interesting to figure out what types of foods are better for you to eat. Take the Avocado, it has 234 calories in a cup. This smooth, green, delicious fruit is full of Potassium, Fiber, all kinds of vitamins and minerals and it has heart-healthy fats. Just looking at the calorie count I would have stayed away from this amazing fruit. Knowing how very healthy it is has me adding it to sandwiches instead of mayo and chopping it in chunks for a salad. Can we say YUMMM.
Here is a list of superfoods from WebMD

  • Beans
  • Blueberries
  • Broccoli
  • Oats
  • Oranges
  • Pumpkin
  • Salmon
  • Soy
  • Spinach
  • Tea (green or black)
  • Tomatoes
  • Turkey
  • Walnuts
  • Yogurt

My first Challenge

Workin on Weight loss Changes!

The first change I am going to make is to go back to logging my food. Logging my food does not keep me from eating what I want it just makes me more aware of what and how much I am eating. I have read places that a person does not need to count calories. It makes sense to me that if the calories in are higher than the calories out you cannot lose weight. Before I started logging my food I did not realize the number of calories that I was eating.  Did you know that a double Baconator has 980 calories?  There is nowhere in my life that it is ok to eat a 980 calorie sandwich, but I have. Who eats just a sandwich at Wendy’s, so let’s add a small french fry. We just added 370 calories to our total. Let’s throw in a medium Sprite, 310 calories. According to nutrition information made available by Wendy’s we have now consumed 1880 calories in one meal. Wow, I think I just gained five pounds writing this.

Do not eat after 6 pm is something that I have noticed from my own scale watch. When I eat after 6 my scale knows and it gives me higher numbers than when I make sure I stop eating at an earlier time. Image result for meanweight scaleWhen I watch TV, I eat and eat and eat.  So I need to find activities that I can do in the evening that does not involve eating. I used to walk on the treadmill in the evening. When I started teaching with VIPKID, I started getting up at four in the morning and bedtime became earlier.  I now go to bed at the time that I would exercise. The saying is early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. I think it made this middle age mom fatter.  I need to find a time where I can consistently exercise. I could just pick a time and say Let’s Go like my little vip students say.

For the next 15 days, I will do 15 minutes of exercise and log my food every day into myfitnesspal app.        See the source image

Hello World

I am not a doctor, nurse or fitness expert. I do not have a Doctorate or any other letters behind my name. I am a fifty-year-old mom that has seen a lot of changes in her life. Some of these changes have been good and some of them not so good but most of them have just happened.
For the last fifty years I have been riding through life coasting on the wind and now I have decided to live with intention, Make changes that have a purpose and not blow like a leaf that goes where the wind takes it.
I am inviting you along on my life changes. I am sharing not a professional or expert opinion but a real-life experience. Join me as I try new things and work towards a new life. I plan on sharing my life and its success or failures. Thoughts, ideas some researched, some in my head and some just found on the big wide web.
One of the biggest changes that I am going to make is that I am going to lose forty more pounds. My goal weight is one hundred and sixty pounds. Over the last ten years, I have lost and gained fifty-six pounds. How am I going to do this? Well come along on my journey and we will figure it out.
Here are other changes that I plan on making in my life.

  1. Financial stability- I have huge student loans and recently filed for bankruptcy.
  2. Travel- I want to travel and see the United States and maybe someday go visit other countries.
  3. Health- with the added twenty-five pounds I have had some health issues come back that I have not had since losing weight.
  4. Happiness- I would like to explore and find what truly makes me happy besides my children. I have one daughter who is grown with children of her own and a son that in less than five years will be grown and gone also. I need to know what will fill my life with happiness.

These are the first life changes that I plan on making. As I work towards my goals please let me know how your journey is going?
